What is personal care?

Personal care is hands-on support with the everyday tasks most of us take for granted, such as washing, bathing, getting dressed, using the toilet and looking after your skin, hair and teeth. When age, illness, disability or recovery from surgery makes these tasks difficult, having a trained carer to help can make each day safer, more comfortable and far less stressful.

Mission Healthcare provides personal care at home across Dartford and north Kent. Our carers visit at times that suit your routine, whether you need a hand getting ready in the morning, a shower a few times a week or support settling into bed at night. Personal care can be arranged on its own or as part of a wider domiciliary care package.

We know that accepting help with intimate tasks can feel like a big step. That is why dignity, privacy and choice sit at the heart of everything we do. You tell us how you like things done and we follow your lead, encouraging you to do as much for yourself as you can while we help with the rest. Our service is overseen by a UK-qualified doctor and a registered nurse.

Who is personal care for?

Personal care can help anyone who finds it hard to manage their own hygiene or daily routine safely. We support older people who are becoming less steady on their feet, people living with dementia, arthritis, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or the effects of a stroke, adults with physical or learning disabilities, and people recovering after a hospital stay or operation. It can also give family members a break from providing intimate care themselves, so they can simply enjoy time together. You can explore all of our home care services in Dartford.

Dignity, privacy and independence come first

Every personal care visit is carried out with patience and respect. Carers explain what they are doing, keep you covered wherever possible and always ask for your consent. We record your preferences in your care plan, from the products you like to use to whether you prefer a shower or a bath, so every carer supports you in the same way. Where it is safe to do so, we encourage you to stay involved in your own care, which helps you keep your confidence, strength and independence.

Help with the cost of personal care

Personal care can be paid for privately or with support from Kent County Council if you are eligible. Start by requesting a free care needs assessment. If the council agrees you need support, a financial assessment will work out whether it contributes to the cost or can offer direct payments so you can choose your own provider. If you need help with personal care because of an illness or disability, you may also be able to claim Attendance Allowance (if you are over State Pension age) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP). We are happy to explain your options and give you a clear, no-obligation quote.

Your Personal Care Questions Answered

Arranging help with personal care is a big decision. Here are answers to the questions families in Dartford and Kent ask us most often.

Personal care covers help with washing, bathing and showering, dressing, using the toilet and continence care, oral hygiene, hair care, shaving and skin care. It can also include help with eating and drinking, medication prompts and moving safely around your home. Your care plan sets out exactly which tasks you would like support with.
We aim to provide a small, consistent team of carers so you can get to know the people supporting you. This matters most with personal care, where trust and familiarity make a real difference. If one of your regular carers is unavailable, we will let you know who is coming.
Yes. Let us know if you would prefer a carer of a particular gender for personal care and we will do our best to meet your request when planning your visits.
It depends on the support you need. Help with getting dressed may only take a short visit, while a bath or shower, continence care and getting ready for the day will take longer. We agree visit lengths during your assessment so your carer never has to rush.
Personal care is one part of domiciliary care. Domiciliary care describes any support provided in your own home, which can include personal care alongside meal preparation, housework, companionship and more. Many of our clients combine personal care with other types of support.
During your assessment we look at how you move around your home and whether equipment could make personal care safer and easier. If equipment would help, we can explain how to request an occupational therapy assessment through Kent County Council or your GP.
Kent County Council may contribute towards the cost of personal care if you are eligible following a care needs assessment and a financial assessment. Some people receive direct payments so they can choose their own provider. If you pay privately, we will give you a clear quote before care begins.
