Who is personal care for?

Personal care can help anyone who finds it hard to manage their own hygiene or daily routine safely. Help with the cost of personal care

Personal care can be paid for privately or with support from Kent County Council if you are eligible. Start by requesting a free care needs assessment. If the council agrees you need support, a financial assessment will work out whether it contributes to the cost or can offer direct payments so you can choose your own provider. If you need help with personal care because of an illness or disability, you may also be able to claim Attendance Allowance (if you are over State Pension age) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Arranging help with personal care is a big decision. Here are answers to the questions families in Dartford and Kent ask us most often.

What does personal care at home include?

Personal care covers help with washing, bathing and showering, dressing, using the toilet and continence care, oral hygiene, hair care, shaving and skin care. It can also include help with eating and drinking, medication prompts and moving safely around your home. Your care plan sets out exactly which tasks you would like support with.

Will I have the same carer for my personal care visits?

We aim to provide a small, consistent team of carers so you can get to know the people supporting you. This matters most with personal care, where trust and familiarity make a real difference. If one of your regular carers is unavailable, we will let you know who is coming.

Can I request a male or female carer?

Yes. Let us know if you would prefer a carer of a particular gender for personal care and we will do our best to meet your request when planning your visits.

How long does a personal care visit take?

It depends on the support you need. Help with getting dressed may only take a short visit, while a bath or shower, continence care and getting ready for the day will take longer. We agree visit lengths during your assessment so your carer never has to rush.

Is personal care the same as domiciliary care?

Personal care is one part of domiciliary care. Domiciliary care describes any support provided in your own home, which can include personal care alongside meal preparation, housework, companionship and more. Many of our clients combine personal care with other types of support.

What if I need equipment such as a shower seat or grab rails?

During your assessment we look at how you move around your home and whether equipment could make personal care safer and easier. If equipment would help, we can explain how to request an occupational therapy assessment through Kent County Council or your GP.

Does the council pay for personal care?

Kent County Council may contribute towards the cost of personal care if you are eligible following a care needs assessment and a financial assessment. Some people receive direct payments so they can choose their own provider. If you pay privately, we will give you a clear quote before care begins.
